Midlife and Identity Crisis

Putting the Pieces Together

When success, roles, or relationships no longer feel meaningful, and questions of "Who am I really?" arise.

Sometimes it comes on quickly.  One day you're walking along in life, the next day you're barely keeping your head above water.

Sometimes it's a quiet voice that has been there a long time that keeps getting louder and demanding your attention saying, "You can't do this anymore."

Our culture does not have many ways to help us to the other side, and can minimize how overwhelming these times of life can be.

When you are re-evaluating things that you built your life around, it can be very lonely.  Especially when important people in your life don't want you to change.

Midlife Crisis

There comes a time in midlife when the path that once made sense begins to fade.  You might look around and realize that the roles you've played, the relationships you've built, and even the career goals you've achieved no longer feel like they fit.

A quiet unease rises, a sense that something deeper is calling for your attention, and the voice inside begins to ask, "Why doesn't it feel the same?"

Many people ignore that voice for a while, hoping their feelings will return to what they once were.  Hoping "this is just a midlife crisis, it will pass."  There is so much in their life that they love.  But inside that quiet voice keeps wondering, "Is this it?  Or is there more to life?"

In Psychodynamic and Jungian Depth therapy, we listen to that voice.  We explore what's falling away and what's trying to be born.

While it can be extremely distressing, these moments are a call to deepen, to turn toward what has been left behind, and to rediscover what is most alive in you.  It can feel selfish, as people want you to remain as you are, or in the role you've always been for them.  It can be an existential life crisis.

This is the time to meet the Self.  The larger, wiser part of you that has been waiting beneath the surface.  Through Psychodynamic and Jungian Depth psychotherapy, we explore the symbols, dreams, and emotions that surface during a midlife or identity crisis, helping you discover what your soul is longing for.

This work is about more than solving problems.  It's about self-discovery and transformation. It's about listening for what your life is asking of you now, and allowing new meaning to take shape.

If you're feeling lost, burned out, restless, or unsure who you are becoming Psychodynamic and Jungian depth therapy can help you navigate this time with compassion and curiosity.  We follow the threads of your story to uncover what is authentic, vital, and ready to emerge.

The Way It is

Along my own journey, I found a few poems that helped me to express what was stirring inside, and I'll share one of my favorites below.

"The Way It Is" by William Stafford

There's a thread you follow.  It goes among

things that change.  But it doesn't change.

People wonder about what you are pursuing.

You have to explain about the thread.

But it is hard for others to see.

While you hold it you can't get lost.

Tragedies happen; people get hurt

or die; and you suffer and get old.

Nothing you can do can stop time's unfolding.

You don't ever let go of the thread.

What is the next step?

  1. Reach Out -  If something here resonates with you, I invite you to reach out using the contact form below.  You can share a bit about what brings you to therapy or what feels important right now. We’ll schedule a brief 15–20 minute phone call to get a sense of what’s unfolding and to see if it feels right to move toward an initial session
  2. The First Meeting -  Our first meeting is a chance to slow down and get to know one another.  We’ll talk about what’s been happening in your life, what’s asking for attention, and what you hope might change.  Together, we’ll explore whether this work feels like a good fit for you.
  3. On-Going Meetings -  If we decide to continue, we’ll find a regular weekly time that supports a steady rhythm of reflection and growth.  Over time, these sessions become a space where you can listen inward, deepen your understanding of yourself, and begin to live from a more grounded and authentic place.

You may not have the words yet. Only the feeling that something needs to change. That’s enough to begin.
