Online and in-person Depth Psychotherapy in Newport Beach

Making sense of what's stirring within

Align your life with your authentic self

Does your life look fine from the outside, but inside you feel restless or empty, like something vital is missing?  Does the life you've built no longer feel aligned with who you truly are?

Many people come to Psychodynamic and Jungian Depth psychotherapy when insight and willpower aren't enough.  You may feel anxious, lost, or disconnected, repeating old patterns or questioning who you're becoming.

Old roles and relationships may not fit the way they once did, and a deeper question begins to emerge: Who am I now?

Depth therapy can help

I offer Depth-oriented therapy in-person in Newport Beach, and online residing anywhere in California, for people seeking self-discovery, healing, and growth.

So you can feel more grounded, connected, and alive

Therapy for helpers and healers

Many of my clients are the ones others turn to for support when things aren't going well.

They are helpers by nature, such as therapists, nurses, empaths, and spiritual healers, who spend their days caring for the emotions and needs of others.

Or they feel the world deeply, such as people who are creative or intuitive, Highly Sensitive People (HSPs), and those who have the soul of an artist.

Being so open becomes heavy

Over time, being so open to the feelings and needs of others can become heavy.  The constant emotional absorption can lead to exhaustion, and withdrawing can start to feel like the only way to rest.

Though naturally kind and attuned, they often feel unseen or disconnected. To keep the peace, they have learned to quiet their true reactions, even when something within them longs to be heard.

Reclaim what is vital

Depth therapy offers a space to reclaim what feels vital and alive within you, and to live a more connected fulfilling life.

Exploring your inner world invites you to listen more deeply to yourself, to the quiet motivations behind your behaviors, to the emotions and traumas that remain unresolved, and to the wisdom that emerges when those parts are brought into balance.

The Quiet Call To Something Deeper

Bring clarity, creativity, and resilience

People are often drawn to Depth Therapy when something in their life no longer feels right, in fact something that has been important now feels cramped and uncomfortable.  Like a jacket that used to fit so well and now feels tight.

Despite their best efforts, they sense an impasse, a heaviness, anxiety, or emptiness in their relationships or daily experience.  Beneath the struggle is a quiet call toward something deeper: the desire to feel more alive, connected, and authentic.

Depth psychotherapy offers a way to explore these inner experiences and the patterns that shape your life.  Helping you to connect with the meaning that may have been lost along the way.

Sometimes the work centers on a specific problem.   Other times, that concern becomes a doorway to deeper exploration and meaningful growth.

Together we explore the unconscious meaning behind your symptoms, dreams, and emotions, so you can reconnect with your inner wisdom and live with greater authenticity, purpose, and wholeness.

Through this process, you can cultivate a life guided not by habit or fear, but by a deeper knowing within.

About Me

Jeannie Colvin

Jeannie Colvin

Hi, I'm Jeannie.   For 20 years I have helped people explore their inner selves so they can better deal with their outer world.  I'm a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (since 2005) with a practice in Newport Beach, CA.

I was a Professor and Director of Clinical Training in a graduate clinical psychology program for over a decade, maintaining my therapy practice while teaching.  There was much I loved about being a professor, but after soul-searching during the COVID quarantine, I decided to devote myself to my therapy practice.

In times of great loss, turmoil, and feeling like the rug of life had been pulled out from under me, I have found healing, guidance, and inspiration in Depth Psychology, and am passionate about how helpful it can be.

Frequently Asked Questions

Depth Psychotherapy is counseling that is informed by Psychodynamic and Jungian Analytical Psychology.  We notice patterns, explore your inner world, work with dreams, honor personal creativity and spirituality, consider the impact of trauma, and give attention to the parts of you that may have been overlooked.

Many people find Jungian ideas especially meaningful in midlife and beyond, or in an existential crisis such as during a divorce, when questions of purpose and authenticity naturally become more vivid.

Depth Psychology sees symptoms as signals, and tries to understand what the signal is trying to say.  Take for instance the symptom of a headache.  In a similar way that taking an aspirin will help alleviate the pain of a headache, therapy can include ways to manage and cope with symptoms.  Often therapy starts here.

However, aspirin will not help you find a way to deal with what is causing the headaches to begin with.  And not all headaches respond to aspirin.  Depth therapy includes management of symptoms, but is particularly good at understanding the underlying causes making the symptoms appear.

Many of my clients have been in therapy before and are now looking for something deeper.  They learned how to "take aspirin," which can be very helpful.  But now they want to understand why the headaches keep coming back.

I discuss this with a few of the common topics bringing people to therapy here.

My fee is $250 for 45 minutes.  I reserve a limited number of spots in my practice to work at a reduced rate (sometimes called a sliding scale).

I don’t take insurance, but I can provide you with a receipt if you’d like to pursue reimbursement.  Let me know if you have any questions about that process.

If you are a therapist, please see my policy for fee.

Therapy meets weekly at a regular day and time.  For those who are interested in a deeper work, we can discuss meeting more than once a week.

We meet regularly as it is the best way to care for you.  You will be learning new ways of thinking and the regular rhythm of meeting best helps to contain what is happening for you while supporting what is emerging.

That depends on your goals.  Research suggests that most people find relief for the symptoms that bring them to counseling within the first 3-6 months.  Others find that as they start to work in this way, they become curious and inspired to understand themselves more, and therapy can extend for several years.  You are welcome to remain as long or as short as feels helpful to you.

  1. Reach Out -  If something here resonates with you, I invite you to reach out using the contact form below.  You can share a bit about what brings you to therapy or what feels important right now. We’ll schedule a brief 15–20 minute phone call to get a sense of what’s unfolding and to see if it feels right to move toward an initial session
  2. The First Meeting -  Our first meeting is a chance to slow down and get to know one another.  We’ll talk about what’s been happening in your life, what’s asking for attention, and what you hope might change.  Together, we’ll explore whether this work feels like a good fit for you.
  3. On-Going Meetings -  If we decide to continue, we’ll find a regular weekly time that supports a steady rhythm of reflection and growth.  Over time, these sessions become a space where you can listen inward, deepen your understanding of yourself, and begin to live from a more grounded and authentic place.
